Preparing Your Home for an Electrician's Visit

Simple steps that make an electrician's visit faster, safer and cheaper.

Describe the fault clearly

Note which sockets, lights or appliances are affected, when the problem started, and whether it happens on NEPA supply, generator, inverter or all three. Photos of the distribution board and any scorch marks help the artisan arrive with the right parts.

Make the work area accessible

  • Clear space around the distribution board and affected sockets
  • Move furniture and valuables away from the work area
  • Keep children and pets in another room

Stay safe while you wait

If you smell burning, see sparks or feel warmth from a socket or switch, turn off the supply at the main switch if it's safe to do so, and don't use the affected circuit until it's been checked.
